US President Donald Trump has warned that his country may be pushed to a point where it will be “no longer able to be reasonable” over Iran and then be forced to annihilate the Persian Gulf nation.
He claimed that the US has the upper hand after it launched further strikes on multiple targets in Iran, a day after it struck the country in retaliation for a drone attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
“There may come a point when we are no longer able to be reasonable, and will be forced to militarily complete the job that we very successfully started,” Trump posted to Truth Social in the wake of Saturday’s strikes.
“If that happens,” he wrote, “the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist.”
About an hour after Trump’s post, the Kuwaiti Army said its air defences were responding to “hostile” missile and drone attacks, while sirens sounded in Bahrain, according to that country’s Interior Ministry.
Elsewhere, US Vice-President JD Vance continued to reiterate the administration’s triumphant line on the war with Iran hours before the latest round of strikes were exchanged.
“If we make the final deal, then great,” he told HBO’s Bill Maher.
“If we don’t make the final deal, their nuclear program is still destroyed. They’re still much weaker as a country, so my attitude is America wins either way.”
Iran Slams US Over Strikes, Vows To Defend Self
On its part, the Iran Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the latest US airstrikes on Southern Iran, saying the attacks show that the regime in Washington has no regard for its commitments.
In a statement on Sunday, 28 June, the Ministry condemned “barbaric attacks” targeting several monitoring and surveillance facilities along Iran’s southern coastline in the early hours of the day.
It said the attacks constituted a clear violation of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of states.
The Ministry also said the strikes breached the first provision of the 18 June memorandum of understanding that ended the war launched by the US and Israel against Iran in late February this year.
“These attacks show that the US regime places no value on its commitments and that breaking its promises is part of its nature,” the statement read.
The Foreign Ministry called on the United Nations Security Council and the UN Secretary-General to fulfill their responsibilities in safeguarding international peace and security.
It also reaffirmed Iran’s determination to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity against US military aggression, citing Article 51 of the UN Charter, which recognizes the inherent right of self-defense.
