FCT Education Secretariat Intensifies Monitoring Of Public Schools To Enhance Learning Outcomes

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Education Secretariat, through its Education Resource Centre (ERC), has intensified the monitoring of the third term promotion examinations in public schools across the six Area Councils of the Territory.

The action is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen quality assurance and improve learning outcomes.

Leading the monitoring exercise, Director, ERC, Dr. Neemat Daud Abdulrahim, said the initiative is aimed at ensuring compliance with established educational standards, safeguarding the credibility of school examinations, and promoting excellence in teaching and learning.

Dr. Abdulrahim explained that the end-of-session promotion examinations play a critical role in determining students’ progression to the next class and, therefore, must be conducted in a fair, transparent, and conducive environment.

She noted that students should be assessed based on the quality of teaching received, effective curriculum implementation, and their actual learning achievements.

According to her, as the agency responsible for developing and coordinating promotion examination questions for public senior secondary schools (SSS) in the FCT, the ERC has a statutory responsibility to monitor the conduct of the examinations to ensure strict adherence to laid-down guidelines, discourage examination malpractice, and maintain the integrity of the assessment process.

She stressed that effective monitoring remains an essential quality assurance mechanism for identifying operational challenges, strengthening accountability, and driving continuous improvement within the education system.

The Director also emphasized the importance of innovation in school administration, particularly in addressing challenges relating to classroom space and seating arrangements during examinations.

She encouraged school principals to adopt practical and proactive measures that promote discipline, fairness, and the smooth conduct of examinations.

Dr. Abdulrahim commended the Principal of Government Science Technical College (GSTC), Mr. Musa Kuta, for his innovative strategy of seating SS1 and SS2 students together in the same examination hall, describing the approach as a simple but effective measure that discourages examination malpractice, promotes independent learning, and enhances discipline and orderliness during examinations.

She further disclosed that the monitoring teams engage with school principals, teachers, and students during their visits to obtain firsthand information on challenges affecting school operations and to make practical recommendations that will support continuous improvement in the delivery of quality education.

Dr. Abdulrahim noted that the FCT Administration, under the Minister of FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has continued to accord high priority to the education sector through the renovation of public schools, improvement of infrastructure, and the strengthening of quality assurance mechanisms aimed at enhancing teaching and learning across the Territory.

Commending the Director and her monitoring team, the Principal of GSTC, Mr. Kuta, applauded ERC for its consistency, professionalism, and commitment to delivering on its statutory mandate.

He noted that the Centre has continued to sustain credible examination processes and robust quality assurance initiatives, adding that public schools across the FCT remain committed to collaborating with ERC in advancing educational standards and ensuring the successful implementation of its mandate.
