Sultan of Sokoto and President General of Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Tuesday, 16 June, 2026, as the first day of Muharram 1448AH, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, who is also the Wazirin Sokoto.
The declaration follows the sighting and verification of the new moon, in accordance with Islamic tradition.
With the commencement of Muharram, Muslims across Nigeria and beyond are expected to begin the new Islamic calendar year with prayers, reflection, and renewed commitment to faith and righteous living.
Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam and holds significant spiritual importance for Muslims worldwide.
