Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has sworn-in seven newly appointed Commissioners, charging them to put public interest first even as they act with integrity.
People&Politics had earlier reported that Gov. Alia forwarded the names of the then Commissioner-nominees to the State House of Assembly for possible confirmation in line with relevant provisions the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Performing the swearing-in ceremony today at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi, Gov. Alia told the Commissioners that their emergence was not merely an elevation to public office, but a call as well as opportunity for them to contribute in their various ways to the state’s development.
Alia charged them to work in accordance with the responsibilities of their offices, insisting that the oath they took was not to serve themselves or any particular interest group, but to serve the people of Benue State truthfully.
Speaking further, Gov. Alia said: “Let me equally remind you that public office is temporary, but the legacies you create through your service can endure for generations.”
He urged the new Commissioners not only to be accessible to their people but also listen to their concerns, visit their villages, interact with the electorates to understand the reality on ground rather than rely solely on reports.
The Governor said: “I expect you to communicate, cooperate and share ideas. Where one Ministry needs the support of another, provide it. Where responsibilities overlap, work together.”
As he assured them of his support and cooperation, Alia encouraged the Commissioners to work together to build a Benue State where good governance would be experienced not merely in government offices, but in the daily lives of the people.
Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated Commissioners, Rt. Hon. Nick Eworo appreciated the governor for trusting them with the responsibility to serve the people as Commissioners, and assured that they would be diligent and would also
ensure fairness and accountability in the discharge of their duties.
Those sworn-in today include: Hon. Kuma Aii Yenge; Hon. Roy Ashirga Terna; Hon. Angwa Egbe Monday; and Hon. Elizabeth Onma Ogenyi, the only female.
The other Commissioners are Hon. Solomon Iorpev; Hon. Nick Eworo, and Hon. Ankwa Amo.
Also at the ceremony, the governor swore in Hon. Godwin Anya as member of the Assembly Service Commission and inaugurated the Chairman, Rev. Fr. Patrick Tor Alumunku and Board members of Benue Television.
