Chairman, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Grace Ike, has called for greater attention to the mental health and wellbeing of journalists who routinely work in high-pressure environments.

Speaking in Abuja during the 2026 NUJ Health Walk held as part of the Press Week activities, Ike said the event’s theme: ‘Mental Health and Stress Management in High-Pressure Work Environments’, reflects the daily realities faced by media professionals.

She noted that journalists in Abuja often work under intense pressure, including having to meet late-night deadlines, exposure to danger, fake news challenges, and confrontations with public officials while striving to report accurately in the public interest.

According to her, the consequent stress associated with the profession can negatively affect both mental and physical health, if not properly managed.

Comrade Ike described the Health Walk as more than just an exercise programme, saying it provides opportunity for journalists to relax, build strength, and encourage one another.

“As we walk together through the streets of Abuja, let’s share our worries, laugh, and plan better days. Simple steps like this can fight burnout and keep us sharp for the job we love,” she said.

She stressed the importance of self-care among journalists, urging union members to adopt healthy habits such as taking breaks during work, seeking counseling when necessary, drinking enough water, and getting adequate rest.

“We must be alive for our stories to be heard or read,” she stressed.

The NUJ Chairman also pledged to continue engaging media organizations and relevant authorities on the need for improved welfare, counseling services, safer workspaces, and better work-life balance for journalists.

She commended the Press Week Organising Committee for a successful event and appreciated sponsors and participants for supporting the initiative.

Ike encouraged journalists to remain united and committed to staying healthy, happy, and prepared to continue serving the nation through responsible journalism.
