Business activities and vehicular movement were paralyzed following heavy rainfall on Thursday morning (today) which triggered flooding across several communities in Karu Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State.
The downpour, which lasted about one and half hours, left many roads, such as the under construction, multi-lane Mararaba section of the busy Abuja-Keffi Expressway, water-logged.
Also affected by flooding were communities such as Kabayi, Mararaba market axis close to the expressway, One Man Village, Gwandara, Sharp Corner, Building Materials Market, Checking Point and parts of Nyanya, where commuters and motorists experienced significant delays in movement.
Our correspondent reports that the situation forced many travellers to seek refuge in nearby filling stations and temporary shelters as the heavens opened windows of relentless rain water.
Other persons abandoned their journeys fearing safety concerns.
Already a notorious area for gridlocks on normal days, the downpour worsened matters in Mararaba, resulting in traffic holdups –a development which ate into production manhours in offices and business centres.
Residents appealed for caution, urging motorists and pedestrians to avoid flooded areas to prevent accidents.
The persistent rainfall also heightened concerns over possible damage to homes, businesses and other property in low-lying communities.
The development followed an earlier weather advisory by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), which predicted light and moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and cloudy conditions from 15 July to Friday, 17 July, 2026, across some parts of the country.
