Relief has come for injured victims of the January 25,2025 Enugu tanker explosion incident as Director-General (DG), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar, visited them in hospitals within Enugu metropolis.

At least 21 persons lost their lives in the fire while many others sustained different degrees of burns and are battling for life in hospitals.

Umar led top management staff of the agency from its Abuja NEMA headquarters on the visit.

It was a joyous occasion too as they came bearing sundry relief materials for the victims.

At National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu, the DG interacted with the victims, asking of their general well-being and welfare.

“I pray God that He gives you all quick recovery and healing; while I am sure you will soon rejoin your families,” she said.

She said: “I bring you the best wishes and recovery prayer of President Bola Tinubu, NEMA, and millions of Nigerians who feel saddened about the unfortunate tanker explosion incident.”

Earlier, Umar had said that the agency had provided food and non-food items as relief in order to cushion the effect of the incident on the victims’ families.

She added that the items had been handed over to Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for distribution.

The DG listed the relief food items as including 200 bags of rice, cartons of food seasoning, 20 cartons of 25kg tomato paste in bags, 200 cartons of spaghetti and 20 cartons of vegetable oil (5 litres x 4), among others.

She noted that non-food items including volumes of medicaments and medical consumables.

These, she said, were meant for all persons affected by the incident following an assessment done by NEMA officials on ground.

Umar appreciated the state government, Enugu State Fire Service, the Federal Road Safety Corps, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Red Cross, medical doctors and other health workers as well as other first responders that provided vital rescue and help to the victims.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, it is the collective responsibilities of all tiers of government (that is, Federal, State and Local Governments) to provide support to disaster victims.

“Hence, NEMA is complementing the efforts of the state government by providing relief assistance to the affected persons,” she said.

She said that emergency challenges emanating from tanker fire explosions called for concerted efforts on disaster risk management and enhanced collaboration between all emergency responders at different levels.
