Borno Terror Attack: 66 Allegedly Buried In Mass Grave

It was a sombre downpour of tears as bodies of scores of victims killed in last weekend’s terror attack by Islamic State for West Africa Province (ISWAP) militias in Dumba,near Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State,were buried in a mass grave in Baga in the North-Eastern state of Nigeria on Tuesday evening, January 14.

The dead comprised mostly farmers and fishermen even as many persons were reported missing after the attack.

The Borno State government had,in a statement, confirmed 40 dead,but independent sources said the death toll from the attack was much higher,with some claiming that over 100 persons lost their lives in the incident.

Borno governor,Babagana Zulum, had assured that government was tracking those reported missing after the attack in order to reunite them with their families.

The Borno terror attacks, including those on three Chibok communities,after the Dumba incident,have been roundly condemned by Nigerians.

Dependable sources, including those who lost loved ones to the attack,told peopleandpolitics.net exclusively on Wednesday, January 15, that 66 persons were buried on Tuesday.

It was learned that their remains were interred under heavy security presence.

Several sources told our correspondent that the mass burial was a tear-filled spectacle.

Kanuri-born rights activist, Kallamu Musa Ali Dikwa, told our correspondent that some of the bereaved locals, including one Mr. Zamdayu, a friend to a victim, and one Mr. Ayuba, a brother in-law to a victim, both of whom he contacted, alleged that they counted 66 bodies mass-buried on Tuesday evening.

Spokesman of the state police command was not reachable when our correspondent tried severally to contact him.

The President Bola Tinubu administration has continued to record successes in the ongoing fight against insurgency.

Defence Headquarters periodically reels out information on activities of the military even as at least 120,000 insurgents have surrendered to government forces.

Most Nigerians fully support the Tinubu administration in its war against terror, some having experienced or witnessed victims who suffered losses at the hands of terrorists.

Several prominent persons and groups have openly praised the gallantry of defence bosses, field commanders, officers and personnel of the nation’s Armed Forces on the frontline.

For instance, Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON) praised the efforts of the Minister of Defence, Mohammad Badaru Abubakar, for the victories recorded in the fight against insecurity.

It described them as a culmination of victories being notched by the Armed Forces.

BON Chairman and the Director General of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Comrade Salihu Dembos, who was represented by the organization’s Vice-Chairman, High Chief Tony Akiotu, made the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Defence in Ship House, Abuja.

“The new collaboration has helped curb insurgents and banditry across the country.

“As a foremost media body in Nigeria with members in over 500 licensed TV and radio stations in the 36 states and Abuja, we have observed the continuous victory of Armed Forces of Nigeria are recording over insecurity and the continuous arrest of high profile bandits in the last one year, with the Ministry of Defence and security agencies using kinetic and non- kinetic strategies to subdue insurgency. This is highly commendable,” he said.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday during the 2025 Regimental Dinner Night as part of activities marking this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, President Tinubu had reassured Nigerians that his administration would not shirk its responsibilities of protecting lives and property.

He said the war on insecurity required collaborative and collective efforts and hailed the sacrifices and successes of the Armed Forces in the fight, adding that he would continue to give their welfare top-drawer priority.
