*If The Private Banking Information Of An Ex-VP And Leading Presidential Candidate Can Be Accessed, Deployed For Unknown Reasons, Then No Nigerian’s Financial Privacy Is Safe, He Says
Immersed in the task of plotting how to win majority votes and become the country’s next President in 2027, an additional worry has beset former Vice President (VP) and presidential candidate of opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar.
Popularly known as Atiku, the nation’s one-time number 2 citizen has found himself caught in a suspicious web of unsolicited financial deposit made into his private account in a prominent commercial bank.
He stated that he does not know the sender of the money, and did not authorize or solicit such gesture from anybody.
Apparently latching onto the prevailing political season in the country, the anonymous sender tagged the deposit narration as “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
Raising the alarm subsequently, Atiku expressed concerns over what he described as suspected breach of his private banking information.
The ADC flagbearer said the incident forms part of what he described as a series of suspicious activities ahead of the 2027 general elections and urged security agencies to take note.
In a statement issued today (Friday) by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA), Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the former VP said the transaction was made despite the fact that neither him nor his campaign team had solicited, authorised, or had any knowledge of the sender.
The former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate described the development as disturbing, noting that the account involved is strictly private and its details are not publicly available.
He questioned how an unknown individual gained access to the confidential banking details, warning that the incident raises broader concerns about the safety of Nigerians’ financial data.
The statement queried: “If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe.”
Atiku further alleged that the leak may have originated from persons with privileged access to sensitive information, warning that such exposure could place account holders at risk from kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, fraudsters and other criminal elements.
Asserting that any attempts at character assassination would fail, he said he is focused on providing credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
