*Nigeria, One Of World’s Most Dangerous Places To Be A Christian -Slovak Legislator
With only one vote against, a total of 501 lawmakers of the European Parliament have asked the Federal Government (FG) to take decisive action against insecurity in the country, especially in the Middle Belt region.
Eighty-six lawmakers abstained from voting.
The development came amid growing concerns over attacks on Christians in the region.
The issue of killings of Christians in Nigeria has provoked local and international outrage with President Donald Trump ordering US troops, alongside the Nigerian military, to launch airstrikes on Islamic State (IS/ISIS) and allied militant camps in Sokoto State on Christmas Day, 25 December, 2025, resulting in serious fatalities.
The European Parliament lawmakers voted in support of a resolution condemning the killings of Nigerian Christians by terrorists, urging the FG to improve security measures, protect vulnerable communities and ensure that perpetrators of violence are brought to justice.
The expressed worry over the worsening security situation in parts of Nigeria, particularly in Plateau State, where several communities have consistently come under attacks in recent months.
The worried lawmakers pointed at the 22 June 2026 attack on Kawel village, Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, where over 20 Christians, including a pastor, were reportedly killed during a night raid by armed assailants.
The lawmakers demanded that the FG deepens efforts against terrorist groups operating across the country, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The Parliament also demanded independent investigations into violent attacks, stressing the need to terminate a culture of impunity.
They urged the FG to strengthen civilian protection mechanisms, improve early warning systems and invest in conflict prevention efforts across affected regions.
Slovak legislator, Miriam Lexmann, described the killings in Kawel community as another tragic example of the violence affecting Christians in parts of the country.
She said: “The horrific attacks in Kawel village where innocent Christians, including their pastor, were brutally killed is yet another tragic reminder of escalating violence against Christians in communities in Nigeria.
“Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. Nigeria has become one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a Christian.”
