Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has launched a series of raids against traders illegally selling items along roads within Ibadan metropolis, the state capital.
The operation, led by the agency’s Chairman, Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd.), targeted Oritamerin, Gege, Agbeni and Ogunpa areas, notorious for the menace.
According to Adesagba, who was accompanied by the agency’s General Manager, Commander Ayoade Adekola, the move aimed at tackling the issues of blocked roads and gridlock in the affected sections of the capital.
He accused traders in the areas of converting the roads into makeshift markets, leading to severe traffic congestion and environmental pollution.
According to him, such activities violate the state’s environmental laws, contributed to indiscriminate waste disposal and drainage system blockage, thereby worsening flooding in parts of the city.
The Chairman expressed disappointment at the traders’ failure to comply with government regulations.
He said the agency’s operatives, who swooped on them, consequently seized stalls, which the traders erected illegally, and imposed fines on those caught.
Also, 12 persons operating an illegal motor park in one of the markets were apprehended and fined, he further disclosed.
Adesagba warned traders to desist from selling on the roads, emphasising that the government’s efforts were geared towards ensuring their safety and protecting their items.
“The OYRTMA’s enforcement operation is part of the Oyo State Government’s broader efforts to reduce accidents and improve road safety.
“This government’s initiatives have led to a significant reduction in accidents, making the roads safer for marketers and road users alike,” he added.
On feedback received from the public so far, Adesagba said OYRTMA’s actions had been commended for promoting a conducive environment for business and easier transportation in the key South-Western State.
