Some impressed residents of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have voiced their appreciation to the authorities over the desilting work being undertaken by staff members of FCT Administration (FCTA)’s Department of Facilities Maintenance and Management (DFMM) with the onset of the first rains.
The department embarked on proactive desilting of manholes and drainages across Asokoro and Wuse Districts of Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Mr. Emeka Onwuegbuna of Queen Elizabeth Street, Asokoro, who spoke to newsmen, said: “The first rain of the year left the roads covered with sand, but the department quickly cleared the debris, restoring access.”
Similarly, Mr. Joshua Pam of Yakubu Gowon Crescent, also in Asokoro, commended the swift response, saying: “Blocked manholes had left roads flooded, but once cleared, water drained away and traffic resumed.”
The desilting initiative, led by engineers from the Civil Services department, targeted major road arteries including Queen Elizabeth Street and Yakubu Gowon Crescent, as well as Aguiyi Ironsi and Kashim Ibrahim Way in Wuse.
The operation cleared accumulated silt, debris, and waste to improve water flow and reduce the risk of flooding.
Speaking on the exercise, Overseeing Director, DFMM, Engr. (Dr) Ayuba A. Usman, said: “This exercise is part of our drainage maintenance culture to ensure free flow of water and prevent blockages.”
Usman, a fellow of Nigeria Society of Engineers (FNSE), added: “By desilting our drainages and manholes, we not only extend the lifespan of this infrastructure but also safeguard public safety and ensure residents can go about their daily activities without disruption.”
The department’s boss pledged to sustain the desilting program throughout the year, monitoring cleared sites and expanding efforts to other districts.
Engr. Usman urged residents to avoid dumping refuse into drains and to report blockages, stressing that community cooperation is vital to maintaining functional drainage systems.
He expressed appreciation to Minister of FCT, Barr. Nyesom Wike, for his leadership and support in enabling the department fulfill its responsibilities.
