“Journalists have sought the Presidency’s reaction to the ruling last Tuesday by a Washington DC judge ordering the US FBI and DEA to release reports connected with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Our response is as follows:
“There is nothing new to be revealed. The report by Agent Moss of the FBI and the DEA report have been in the public space for more than 30 years.
“The reports did not indict the Nigerian leader. The lawyers are examining the ruling.”
This was the reaction of Nigeria’s Presidency today, April 13, to the United States (US) District Court of Columbia verdict which last Tuesday ordered the Federal Bureau of Intelligence (FBI) to make public President Tinubu’s personal details.
The reaction came from presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on X (formerly Twitter).
Peopleandpolitics.net had earlier reported today that Judge Beryl Howell of the District Court issued the order in the wake of a motion by Aaron Greenspan, an American who is seeking a review of an earlier ruling which halted a bid to release the information.
The information per se has to do,among others, with an allegation that Tinubu, in 1993, forfeited $460,000 to the US Government after authorities linked the funds to proceeds of narcotics trafficking –an alleged action upon which opposition presidential candidates in the 2023 Nigeria poll, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, partly anchored their argument that Tinubu was ineligible to run for office of president.
The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) and Supreme Court, however, dismissed their prayers that Tinubu’s election victory be subsequently overturned, and affirmed his triumph.
Greenspan had accused the FBI of violating the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by failing to release within the statutory time “documents relating to purported federal investigations into” Tinubu and a certain Abiodun Agbele.
