Manchester United dragged themselves up off the canvas to come from two goals down to record a sensational Champions League victory against Roma at Old Trafford,on Tuesday, 3 November.

United seemed finished and head coach Michael Carrick destined for the sack as Roma scored twice in six first-half minutes, through Matias Soule and a Donyell Malan penalty.

The goals turned the atmosphere inside Old Trafford venomous. Green tennis balls were thrown onto the pitch as a further sign of protest against the club’s ownership.

Green and gold balloons were released as the teams came out and songs were chanted against the Glazer family, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and director of football Jason Wilcox.

United’s evening got even worse when £70m midfielder Carlos Baleba suffered a hamstring injury that looks set to keep him out for a period of time.

But from the depths of despair, United rallied.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes kept his nerve to drive home a twice-taken penalty after a Roma player entered the area.

Then, after a Bryan Mbeumo shot had hit both posts, Matheus Cunha capitalised on Leonardo Balerdi’s error to equalise, before the Brazilian drilled home a shot from an acute angle four minutes from time.

Cunha was sent off for a second booking as the game entered stoppage time but in front of a frenzied crowd, United survived to end their nine-game wait for a victory.

Barca Just Too Much Of A Handful For Villa

In another match, same day, Barcelona ended Aston Villa’s perfect Champions League start with an enthralling win at the Spotify Nou Camp.

Lamine Yamal and Raphinha’s double eventually eased the five-time European champions to victory after the Premier League side gave them a first-half scare.

Matty Cash, Victor Lindelof and Johan Manzambi had chances, but Villa were left to contemplate what might have been.

They had gifted Barca, who leapfrogged the visitors into second place in the league phase table, a seventh-minute lead when Joao Gomes’ panicked ball across the box allowed Lamine Yamal to curl in his 13th goal in 15 games.

Yet Villa refused to sit back and played their role in an open and engrossing encounter which almost delivered a leveller.

Cash and Lindelof had shots deflected behind, while Manzambi scuffed wide before testing home keeper Joan Garcia.

Villa tried to exploit a Barca side without a Champions League clean sheet in 18 games, but were left to rue their misses when Raphinha’s low shot clipped Pau Torres to wrong-foot keeper Zion Suzuki and make it 2-0 seven minutes after the break.

The former Leeds United forward then added a classy close-range third in the 64th minute after excellent work and a glorious pass from Joao Cancelo on the left, before Suzuki denied Anthony Gordon a fourth.

Leon Goretzka’s header glanced the post as Villa pushed for a consolation, but Barca finally earned their first European shutout since April 2025.

PSG Ruthless Away To Villarreal

In another game, Paris St-Germain (PSG) continued their impressive Champions League campaign as they thrashed Villarreal.

Some home supporters departed the ground before the clock had even reached 20 minutes as a rampant PSG netted four times within the opening 17 minutes.

All four of those goals came as a result of sloppiness at the back from the Spanish club, which was punished by an attacking line who have already put four past Barcelona and Manchester City in Europe this season.

Joao Neves delivered the first when he drilled in from close range after Villarreal failed to deal with a corner.

The second came quickly as PSG latched on to a calamitous pass out from the back by goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi and worked the ball to Desire Doue, who fired home.

Just a minute later Villarreal were caught out once again as they had possession snatched from them when playing out from the back and Senny Mayulu drove an effort past Gulacsi.

Next, it was the turn of Fabian Ruiz to get on the scoresheet as PSG worked the ball back to the Spain midfielder in the box, who drilled inside the near post.

Ruiz made it five after the break when he produced a deft touch to leave his marker on the ground before tucking the ball past Gulacsi.

Victory was rounded off by 17-year-old David Boly, who surged up the flank and sent an effort in off the leg of a Villarreal defender.

PSG are top of the league phase standings on a perfect 12 points and host Roma in their next match on 25 November. Villarreal have won just one game and travel to Slavia Prague on the same day for their next fixture.
