Displaying true spirit of Christmas, a public-spirited group visited Amanawa community of Sokoto State on Tuesday, 23 December, to share love, care, and festive cheer with residents living with disabilities, including several leprosy patients.
The team arrived with a wide range of relief items including foodstuffs (rice, vegetable, seasoning), clothing, and most importantly large quantities of medicated bandages and wound dressing materials specifically for leprosy patients who require regular wound care.
Speaking during the distribution, one of the coordinators who simply identified herself as Rose, said Christmas is about love, compassion and remembering those who are often forgotten.
“These are our brothers and sisters. If we can put smiles on their faces, ease their pain even a little, and let them know they are seen and valued, then we have truly celebrated Christmas,” she said.
In return, several beneficiaries expressed deep appreciation and hratitude for the gesture.
For instance, Minuna Abdullah, a longtime resident of the community who has lived with leprosy for many years, said in an emotion-laden voice: “People normally avoid us, especially during Christmas. But today you people came with food, with medicine for our wounds, and you sat with us, laughed with us. God will bless you all.”
The distribution exercise was marked by moments of shared prayers, and many heartfelt hugs between visitors and community members.
Community leaders present described the visit as a powerful reminder that no one should be forgotten during the season of love and giving.
