Residents, motorists and others located between Kompanin Bobby and Wamba in Mariga Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State fled for dear life yesterday following reports of the sighting of scores of suspected insurgents heading towards the axis.
Sources said hundreds of heavily armed insurgents, traveling on motorcycles, reportedly from Zamfara State, were spotted crossing the Kontagora–Minna highway between both communities.
It was gathered that a local security team comprising mainly of vigilantes, mobilized to challenge and halt the advance of the stern-faced, no nonsense-looking insurgents, was worsted in an ensuing battle, with two killed and one injured and currently undergoing treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
Mariga LGA Chairman, Abbas Kasuwa Garba,
confirmed the incident, saying that after the defeat of the local vigilantes, more security forces had been dispatched to the area to
try to root out the insurgents.
What shocked the thoroughly scared and fleeing residents of the area was that the bandits were moving freely in the afternoon in a convoy openly brandishing their military-grade weapons, virtually unchallenged.
Sources claimed they were heading for Mashegu LGA in Niger State.
Cheery news came, however, with the disclosure that soldiers stationed at Beri camp had been mobilized to battle the advancing terrorists.
