Medical Doctor From FCTA Hospitals Residency Programme Emerges W/Africa’s Best


Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) again reaped huge from its investment in medical excellence as one of its own, Dr. Yibala Akpama Edimek, emerged Overall Best Candidate in the Fellowship Examination of Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the highly prestigious West African College of Surgeons (WACS).

The extraordinary achievement is a testament to what the organizers described as the punctilious and rigorous training programme of FCTA’s Hospitals Residency Training Scheme, which continues to produce world-class specialists that distinguish themselves both within and beyond Nigeria.

The WACS is a globally-acclaimed professional body dedicated to advancing surgical education, training, and research across 18 West African countries.

These include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea.

Others are Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and The Gambia.

Standing tall among candidates from across the region, Dr. Edimek won both the Professor Bello Osagie Prize for Overall Best Candidate and the Professor Oladipo Prize for the Best Female Candidate in the examination.

Her remarkable achievements were recognized and celebrated at the 65th Annual Scientific Conference of WACS held in Bamako, Mali, where she proudly showcased FCTA and Nigeria to the world, last month.

At the event, highlight was thrown on her exceptional academic and clinical prowess, underscored by the outstanding training standards of the FCTA Residency Programme.

Her citation showed that Dr. Edimek’s success directly reflects the high-quality mentorship and hands-on clinical exposure provided by the FCTA Hospitals Residency Programme.

“From her early training as a Registrar rotating through Wuse, Maitama, and Asokoro District Hospitals, to her years as a Senior Registrar, and now her qualification as a Consultant, Dr. Edimek’s journey exemplifies excellence, dedication, and resilience,” it said.

The success affirmed the exemplary role of FCTA trainers, whose dedication to mentoring and shaping the next generation of medical specialists, continued to earn national and international recognition,with the “landmark achievement” been seen as “a resounding endorsement of FCTA’s investment in human infrastructure, further cementing its position as a leader in healthcare excellence in Nigeria and West Africa.”
