Dominic Solanke scored in stoppage time to salvage a point for 10-man Tottenham as they snatched a draw against Manchester United in a feisty encounter at Old Trafford, today.
It looked as if United were about to pile more misery on the visitors following their pitiful start to the Premier League season when Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute.
United entered the international window with just two wins from seven matches, with those coming against newly promoted Ipswich Town and Champions League debutants Sabah.
After disappointing home defeats to Manchester City and Brighton before the three-week break, the hosts had a point to prove to their disgruntled supporters.
But the fans were left unimpressed again by a lethargic first-half performance, with their players appearing to lack energy as the visitors pressed high and dominated.
However, things went from bad to worse for Spurs when Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off five minutes after Mbeumo’s goal for headbutting Luke Shaw, who had shoved him over after a reckless challenge from the Uruguay midfielder.
But Solanke, who was captaining Tottenham for the first time, nodded Sandro Tonali’s cross into the back of the net in the second minute of added time to lift Spurs off the bottom of the table.
Roberto de Zerbi’s side remain winless, however, and stay in the relegation zone – above both Fulham and Coventry City – with just three points from the first six games.
Fans Boo Utd At Old Trafford
United have suffered their own shaky start to the campaign with just one victory and a sluggish first-half performance was met with boos by the home fans on Saturday.
They were much improved after the break, but jeers once again echoed around Old Trafford at full-time.
This was the second successive league game they have dropped points against a team that were reduced to 10 men – following their 1-0 derby defeat by Manchester City last month.
Like so many of their matches so far this season, Tottenham were the better team to start with and penned United in with their high press and quick tempo.
But once again they lacked conviction in front of goal and were left to rue missed early chances, with Solanke, Mohammed Kudus and Conor Gallagher all failing to find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes.
For the 18th time in 2026, Spurs were unable to score in the first half of a Premier League game and they could not assert the same level of control after the break as United responded.
They were ultimately punished when Mbeumo effortlessly strode past Jan Paul van Hecke and angled a strike past Antonin Kinsky and into the bottom right corner.
Bentancur’s two-footed challenge on Shaw – coming straight after a wild sliding tackle from van Hecke – perhaps warranted a red card on its own, but referee Stuart Atwell was left with no choice but to send him off when he planted his head towards the England left-back’s face.
Solanke’s glancing header won’t stop the growing scrutiny on Spurs boss De Zerbi, who has won just four of his 15 games in charge, but it does at least show the team have a fighting spirit as they try to haul themselves up the table.
Kudus swept a strike just wide and Gallagher had a close-range attempt smothered by Senne Lammens, who came to United’s rescue again after the restart when he denied Savio and got a hand to Solanke’s sliding effort.
They were handed another lifeline through Mbeumo’s goal, but could not capitalise on that, nor Bentancur’s dismissal as Lammens was left rooted to the spot as Solanke got in front of Lisandro Martinez to head in the leveller.
Boss Michael Carrick’s position may not be under immediate threat, despite United’s worst start after four games since the 1986-87 campaign, but the frustration vented by the home fans at full-time indicate there is growing concern over the team’s mentality.
Alonso Hails Caicedo Impact As Chelsea Thump Bournemouth
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has had to wait until October to see what his side can do with midfielder Moises Caicedo properly back in the team and he was delighted with his role in the 5-1 demolition of Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.
Alonso – who oversaw two victories in his first two matches in charge of Chelsea before failing to win any of the next three – gave Caicedo his first start of the season after being sidelined with a calf problem.
The Ecuadorian, 24, provided a stronger shield for Chelsea’s defence that has looked shaky since the campaign began and he formed an effective partnership with 36 year-old Jordan Henderson who scored twice.
Alonso stressed the importance of Caicedo’s return after a brief appearance in August when he lasted only 14 minutes as a substitute before having to limp off.
“With him we have a better midfield area and when you are better in the middle you have a more complete team and something to build around,” the Spaniard told reporters.
“I am so happy that Moi is feeling better because he is going to be a key player for us. We knew that and we have seen (it) today.”
In further encouragement for Chelsea fans, right back Marco Palestra – who signed from Atalanta in Italy in the close season but was injured soon after – made his debut as a substitute.
The two goals from Henderson and another two from Joao Pedro – both players who have also been in the medical room – and a Morgan Rogers strike underscored Chelsea’s reputation as one of the Premier League’s entertainers this season.
They added to their tally of early goals as they rushed into a 2-0 lead within 149 seconds and got their third a little more than 30 seconds after the start of the second half.
Cole Palmer celebrated signing a contract extension by providing two assists, adding to the signs that he is getting back to top form.
The only worries for Alonso were Chelsea’s failure to keep a clean sheet for a 22nd Premier League game in a row when Bournemouth striker Evanilson briefly gave the visitors hope in the second half, and the absence of captain Reece James.
