All is set for today’s 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
When People&Politics visited the venue to monitor preparations, from a safe distance as security was tight at the iconic Eagle Square venue, it was observed that arrangements were been concluded for the annual event designed to celebrate Nigerian’s fallen heroes.
Staff members of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA)’s Department of Facilities Management and Maintenance (DFMM) were spotted putting finishing touches to preparations to ensure a hitch-free celebration.
The environment around the Eagle Square and National Arcade was noticeably sparkling, appearing spick and span, imbuing the venue with an aesthetic look and emitting a satisfying air of sheer beauty, tidiness and class worthy of the celebration which usually attracts not just top Federal Government functionaries, but also members of the foreign diplomatic corps and friends of Nigeria.
During the visit by People&Politics, it was further noticed that DFMM had so far painted and facelifted the National Arcade, for the wreath-laying ceremony.
Its barricades were also touched up in dazzling white and green colours –the national colours.
The department also saw to the hoisting of national flags at Eagle Square.
Its officials undertook electrical installations, especially for sound, and placement/testing of bulbs for aesthetic beauty and functionality.
Also observed was the arranging and laying of rugs in designated areas within the National Arcade for Presidential Guard inspection and laying of wreaths in honour of the fallen heroes.
The department also arranged canopies and chairs for dignitaries and invited guests –all under the watchful eyes of armed security agents.
Bystanders and other members of the public were heard expressing pleasure at the degree of professionalism and quality of work put in by the DFMM officials.
For instance, a man, Eze Chukwuma, who introduced himself merely as a civil servant in one of the Federal Ministries located at the nearby Federal Secretariat, gushed thus:”I’ve been witnessing preparations for Armed Forces Remembrance Day for years now, but it seems the arrangements for this year’s surpass previous ones.
“The high quality of work, the enthusiasm to work, the visible competence of the staff of whatever is the name of the FCTA agency that did all these works, is greatly commendable.
“Despite how things are in the country now, in terms of socio-economic profile, with many civil servants not putting in their best at work, I saw these ones work hard daily with smiles on their faces. I pray they and their boss be rewarded by the Administration.”
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration is observed on 15 January. It serves to honor veterans of the World Wars 1 and II and Nigerian Civil War.
