The Leprosy Mission Nigeria, in collaboration with Sokoto State government and other stakeholders, has organized a session to create awareness on the importance of mental wellbeing as part of activities to mark World Mental Health Day.
The events held at the Doctors House, Sokoto, underscored the critical importance of mental well-being among citizens.
Dr. Attahiru Abusufyan of the Neuropsychiatric Department of Usmanu Dan Fodio Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, who spoke on the occasion, highlighted trauma, particularly among individuals affected by war and insecurity, as a major contributor to mental health disorders.
He stressed the urgent need for widespread awareness and education to help citizens better understand and manage mental health challenges.
Representing the Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar Wurno, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ibrahim Haliru Dingyadi, on his part, reaffirmed the State government’s commitment to improving mental health services.
He noted that the state has taken bold steps to strengthen the health sector and ensure better service delivery for mental health care.
In separate remarks, representatives of partner organizations supporting mental health in Sokoto, Dr Victory Daniel of Danish Refugees Council, Peter Kolapo of Albarka Health, Ameh Jerry, State Program Officer at The leprosy Mission, emphasized the importance of prioritizing mental well-being.
They urged individuals and communities to take proactive steps in caring for their mental health and to seek support when needed.
World Mental Health Day is observed annually on October 10 to raise global awareness about mental health issues and advocate for better mental health care.
