After 26 unbroken years of governance by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Enugu State may be governed by another party, the federally-ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) with State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, reportedly set to cross over to APC.
National Chairman and Deputy National Chairman, South-East, of the APC, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda and Emma Eneukwu, respectively, broke the news in Abuja, the Nigeria capital, today, 10 October.
Reports said Mbah could announce his decamping on Tuesday next week at an event in the South-East state.
The APC national leadership revealed the governor’s imminent defection to the ruling party during today’s swearing-in of newly-inaugurated members of the Enugu State APC Caretaker Committee, led by former State Chairman, Ben Nwoye, at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
Nwoye, who confirmed the development, said the governor will join the ruling party alongside all his appointees.
There are speculations that Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas –like Mbah, also of PDP -is set to join APC.
Mbah joining the APC will bring to three the number of governors in the five-state South-East zone who are in APC.
Governors Hope Uzodinma (Imo state), who emerged governor through a Supreme Court verdict after emerging fourth in the March 2019 governorship election; and Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi) are the other APC governors in the zone.
Of the two remaining states, Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra state belongs to All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) while Gov. Alex Otti of Abia state is of the Labour Party (LP).
