The relative recent calm enjoyed in Sokoto State was broken following a suspected terrorist attack on a community in Wurno Local Government Area (LGA) of the North-West state.
Residents of Chacho village were thrown into panic as suspected terrorists abducted nine persons and injured two others in the attack.
The incident, which occurred late Wednesday night, disrupted the fragile peace of the community, leaving residents in fear and uncertainty.
Eye witnesses said the attackers stormed the village from Sabon Birni forest axis, firing sporadically to scare residents before carrying out the operation.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, said the assailants arrived in large numbers shortly before midnight.
“They came without warning and started shooting. The sound of gunfire was deafening, and people ran in different directions for safety,” the source said.
Another resident noted that despite efforts by local vigilante groups to secure the area following a similar incident last year, the attackers caught the community off guard.
After the attack, villagers discovered that nine persons, comprising seven women and two men, had been taken away by the gunmen, while two others sustained injuries in the ensuing chaos.
The latest incident has also revived painful memories among residents, particularly recalling the abduction of a bride-to-be from the same village just a day before her wedding last year.
Confirming the attack, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Sokoto State Command, Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Ahmad Rufai, said further details would be provided after he received full briefing.
But, security agencies were yet to release additional information as of the time of filing this report.
