At least three persons have been killed in a violent cult clash at the Igbogene suburb of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.
The attack, which occured Sunday night, triggered panic as gunshots were heard in different sections of the area.
Though the identities of the victims could not be immediately ascertained, eyewitnesses described the clash as a continuation of cult-related violence plaguing parts of the state.
Residents reportedly fled their homes, and business activities were halted during the orgy of violence.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear for his life, called for intensified security surveillance to restore calm in the area.
The latest incident adds to recent cult clashes in parts of the state with six people reportedly killed in separate incidents, raising safety concerns.
Residents urged the state government and security agencies to move fast and prevent further bloodshed.
Contacted, spokesman of the State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Musa Muhammed confirmed the incident.
He said: “Yes, three lives were lost. Investigation has commenced and effort is on to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.”
