The Headquarters, 82 Division, Nigerian Army (NA), Enugu, has commended those it described as courageous and patriotic traders of Onitsha Main Market for the decision to reopen their businesses “after years of succumbing to empty threats of enemies of the nation.”
It stated that “this bold step represents a collective stand for peace, security, and economic progress in Anambra State and the South-East region at large.”
In a statement by acting Deputy Director, Amy Public Relations, 82 Division, Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, the military noted that for years, criminal elements masquerading as freedom fighters had been instilling fear and undermining the livelihoods of hardworking citizens.
It stated that their action, which was designed to instill fear, cripple commerce, destabilize communities, and erode confidence in government institutions has long been defused, pointing out that the courage of “these patriotic traders” in reopening their shops in the face of the Monday sit-at-home exercise imposed on the populace, has “authenticated the giant strides by the security agencies.”
By rejecting intimidation and resuming business, they have demonstrated resilience and a firm commitment to peace and progress, the Army stressed.
“On this note, 82 Division NA assures all stakeholders that the Onitsha Main Market, and indeed all economic centers in the region, will be protected with every necessary measure.
“Security forces remain fully deployed, on alert while intelligence-led kinetic operations are ongoing to dismantle the remnants of IPOB and ESN from their hideouts. The safety of lives and property of the traders and all law abiding citizens in general remain our highest priority.
“We urge all residents to continue their lawful activities without fear, shun intimidation and embrace courage in the face of empty threats.
“The NA stands ready to defend the people against those who are bent on ruining the economic prosperity of the South-East.
“All criminal elements are hereby warned to lay down their arms, renounce violence, and embrace peace. Unrepentant criminals will face the full weight of the law and the decisive force of the security agencies, as no hiding place will shield them from justice,” it warned.
The Division reiterated its unwavering commitment to the protection of all citizens, the security of life and property, and the defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty.
“We further call on the public to disregard false threats intended to undermine the peace support efforts of the security agencies.
“The Division will continue to work closely with civil authorities, traditional institutions, and other security agencies to ensure lasting peace and security throughout the state.
“Members of the public are encouraged to provide credible information on any security threat for prompt action. Together we shall defeat all acts of terrorism,” it stated.
According to the statement, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division, and Commander Joint Task Force South East Operation Udo Ka, Maj Gen Oluremi Fadairo appreciated the political will of the government of Anambra state, pointing out that the support of the state government has been instrumental in ongoing efforts to end terrorism and restore normalcy in the region.
Hard Times For Operators Of Dirty Business Premises As Awka Capital Territory Spits Fire
Meanwhile, the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) in Anambra State has directed factories and businesses to maintain a clean environment or pay a fine of N300,000.
ACTDA directed factories, companies and business operators within the capital territory to maintain a clean and safe environment around their premises or face sanctions.
The directive, issued by ACTDA Environmental Officer, Mr. Jude Nworah, on behalf of the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Dr. Ossy Onuko, stated that operators are required to regularly cut and clear grasses within and around their premises, provide waste bins and ensure proper refuse disposal.
ACTDA disclosed that its enforcement team will commence routine inspections from 15 February, 2026, warning that defaulters will be sanctioned with a fine of N300,000 or face legal prosecution.
Nworah said the inspection exercise will cover factories, companies and other business premises across Awka to ensure compliance with environmental sanitation standards.
He noted that the directive became necessary following the poor environmental condition previously observed in parts of the capital city, including blocked drainage systems and unclean gutters.
According to him, several establishments had earlier been served notices to carry out clean-up exercises and desilting of drainages, stressing that the enforcement process would not be compromised.
