Leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, today did a U-turn on his earlier plan to call witnesses in his defence in the ongoing trial for alleged terrorism offences preferred against him.

On 24 October this year, the Federal High Court Abuja adjourned till today for Kanu to open his defence.

Kanu had communicated the court of his intention to call witnesses and applied for witness summons. He also begged the court for time to study his case file.

Today, when the case was called, the IPOB leader said he has gone through the case file and realised that there is no valid charge against him.

Kanu contended that since he is convinced that there is no valid charge against him and that he was being subjected to unlawful trial, there would be no need for him to open any defence.

Replying, Justice James Omotosho,on this score, directed him to file a written address and serve the prosecution.

Nonetheless, Justice Omotosho advised him to consult criminal law experts on the consequences of the option he has just chosen.
