Benue Assembly Dumps Tongue-twisting State Varsity Name, Adopts Concise One

By our reporter

Picking a shorter name, Benue State House of Assembly, again, modified the statute on the name of the state-owned university, Rev Fr Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, the state capital.

Seeing this name as unwieldy, cumbersome, tongue-twisting and bumpy to pronounce, the lawmakers renamed it simply as Father Adasu University Makurdi (FAUM).

Lawmakers reached the decision during today’s plenary after considering the report of the House Standing Committee on Higher Education.

Leading the debate, Majority Leader, Hon. Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa) explained that the earlier name, “Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi,” was unnecessarily lengthy.

The University was originally known as Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi until it was first renamed in December 2024.

Also at today’s session, the House approved amendments upgrading the College of Education, Katsina-Ala and the College of Education, Oju into degree-awarding institutions.

Presiding Speaker, Hon. Alfred Emberga instructed the House Clerk, Dr Bem Mela, to read the bills for a third time before declaring them passed.
