Omoyele Sowore and other activists this morning led retired police officers to protest the continued inclusion of personnel, serving and retired, in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
To them, the scheme has failed in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and should be dumped.
The protesters were also demanding improved service conditions for serving personnel.
Frowning at the planned protest before the event, Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) had severely warned the retired personnel against the protest, stressing that consequences will follow.
PCRC moved further, saying the protest was targeted at discrediting the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and the Federal Government of President Bola Tinubu.
As of this morning, the protesters had visited the National Assembly Complex and Force Headquarters.
Ahead the protest, the umbrella Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers (NURPO) had vowed to picket the National Assembly Complex and then move to Force Headquarters to press home the demand for their urgent yank-off from the CPS.
According to them, the CPS has been “discriminatory” against police personnel even as they disclosed that several NURPO members had died on account of the scheme’s warts.
