*He’s First Professor Of Toxicology From North-West
Another plume was added to the much-decorated hat of Vice Chancellor (VC), Federal University Gusau (FUGUS), Professor M.G. Abubakar, as he was inducted as a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB).
Professor Abubakar’s induction, alongside six others, was witnessed by the creme de la creme of the nation’s Biochemistry and Molecular Biology profession at a colourful ceremony which held at Assembly Hall of Nasarawa State University, Keffi,on Tuesday,July 8.
A statement dated Wednesday, July 9, signed by the Head of the University’s Committee on Media and Communications, Dr Linus Akor, and made available to People&Politics , disclosed these.
It stated that the conferment of the prestigious title of Fellow, which is the highest insignia for deserving members of the 47-year old Society, followed the acceptance of Professor Abubakar’s unanimous nomination by NSBMB’s National Executive Committee.
The award letter which preceded the investiture, dated July 7, 2025, was signed by the Secretary General of the Society, Professor Abdulkadir Abubakar and addressed to Professor M.G. Abubakar, People&Politics gathered.
In the letter, Professor Abdulkadir had noted that the VC’s elevation as Fellow of NSBMB was in recognition of his commitment and contributions to the survival and sustenance of the professional body.
The letter read, in part: “It is in recognition of your invaluable contributions to the upliftment and enhancement of the Society’s visibility in Nigeria and beyond, that members of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology unanimously nominated you for the prestigious award of Fellow of NSBMB, which was expressly approved by the National Executive Committee of this noble body.”
The VC, an alumnus of the University of Surry, Guildford, UK, and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, is the first professor of Toxicology from North-Western Nigeria.
He is an active member of several other international professional bodies like the Biochemistry Society, UK, British Toxicology Society and West African Society of Pharmacology.
The University Management and community congratulated him “on the well-deserved recognition and award of Fellow, by the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology,” Dr Akor stated.
