National Chairman of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is said to have resigned from his position with immediate effect, citing health reasons.
He reportedly said there was need to priority his well-being. Ganduje is 75 years old.
Ganduje was yet to react to the report, after an X post by former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, today broke the news of his ‘resignation’.
The post read: “The National Chairman of our great party, the All Progressives Congress(APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned from his position, effective immediately, as confirmed by multiple sources.”
If confirmed, the resignation is likely to have wide implications for not just the party, but especially for President Bola Tinubu’s second term bid, Ganduje being perceived in the far North as a close ally of the president.
As developments unfold, it is noteworthy that Ganduje has been facing criticism from some hardliners in the party who believe that he could not continue to be party Chairman without home base, having not delivered his base, Kano, to the APC.
Kano is governed by the opposition New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
