Model School Maitama Appoints New Prefects For 2025/26 Academic Session


Prominent public school in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Model Secondary School (MSS), Maitama, known for its academic excellence and discipline, has appointed new student leaders.

The new prefects will serve for the 2025/2026 academic session, taking on the responsibility of maintaining order and upholding the school’s values.

At the official decoration ceremony, the Director/Principal of the school, Dr. Judith Olure, emphasized the significance of student leadership, stating that the transition was necessary as the outgoing prefects in Senior Secondary (SS) 3 prepare for their West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations scheduled for May this year.

She noted that the new prefects were selected based on merit, character, and commitment to their academics.

Addressing the new prefects, Dr. Olure urged them to take their leadership roles seriously, remain responsible, and lead by example, stressing the importance of diligence, punctuality and good conduct.

The Principal explained that their appointment is an opportunity given them to serve and not to be served, hence they must maintain discipline.

She warned against any form of misconduct or bullying, stressing that such would not be tolerated by the school authority.

She commended the outgoing prefects for their commitment to ensuring a conducive learning environment and enforcing school regulations.

The guest speaker, President of a non-governmental body, Future Focus Foundation, Mrs. Chevonne Jibromah, who spoke on ‘Leadership Skills’, said being a leader is to render selfless service to fellow students and the school, adding that their role is to make the learning environment a better place for all, irrespective of position.

Mrs Jibromah listed some key leadership skills such as responsibility and accountability,communication skills in active listening, understanding the concerns of students and reporting them appropriately, teamwork to foster unity among students,the seeking of advice and making balanced decisions.

She urged the new leaders to be confident,honest in all things and have high moral standards, among others.

Mrs Jibromah advised them to be flexible in adjusting to school challenges and manage their emotions and those of others.

Also speaking, the Senior Mistress (Special Duties), Mrs. Akanu Ugoma, congratulated the new prefects and encouraged them to see their positions as an opportunity to serve their peers while balancing their academic work as excellence in both areas would define their tenure.

In his acceptance speech, the newly appointed Headboy, Master Abdulkadir Amir, expressed gratitude to the school management for the confidence placed in them, assuring that they would uphold the values and discipline for which MSS Maitama is known.

The highlight of the brief ceremony was the official decorations of the new prefects with accompanying applause from students and a charge from the school authority urging the students to support their new leaders and continue striving for excellence in academics and character.
