Journalists, Key to Good Governance -Sokoto Gov

By Rosemary Ameh, Sokoto

Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State has reaffirmed the critical role of journalists in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance, describing them as indispensable partners in nation-building.

The governor made this known during a special Ramadan Iftar with executives of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, alongside Chairmen, Secretaries, and Treasurers of the seven NUJ chapels in the state.

He noted that both conventional and social media play vital roles in shaping public discourse, holding leaders accountable, and setting the governance agenda.

Governor Aliyu, however, urged media practitioners to uphold the ethics of the profession, emphasizing that his administration welcomes constructive criticism.

“We value the role of the media and remain committed to transparency. Constructive feedback will always be appreciated as we work towards building a new Sokoto State,” he said.

The governor also called on Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence, describing this year’s fasting period as unique, with both Ramadan and Lent observed simultaneously by Muslims and Christians respectively.

Reiterating his commitment to an inclusive and open door administration, he encouraged journalists to seek clarification from his office—particularly through the Directorate of Media and Publicity—to ensure balanced and accurate reporting.

On security, Gov. Aliyu disclosed that his administration has provided over 200 vehicles, hundreds of motorcycles, and other logistics to security agencies to enhance safety across the state.

As part of efforts to support the media, the governor donated an official vehicle to the NUJ and assured that requests such as the rehabilitation of the Press Centre and inclusion of journalists in state committees would be addressed by the Secretary to the State Government.

Earlier, the NUJ State Chairman, Usman Mohammed Binji, commended the governor for fostering collaboration between government and the media.

He noted that such engagements create opportunities to address challenges facing journalists and strengthen professional partnerships.

Binji also acknowledged the administration’s strides in sectors including education, healthcare, security, youth and women empowerment, and rural development, citing several completed and ongoing projects within the past three years.

The event featured the presentation of an Award of Appreciation to Governor Aliyu by the NUJ in recognition of his support for media development in Sokoto State.
