Fear Grips Maiduguri As Multiple Explosions Rock Teaching Hospital, Popular Market

There was pandemonium in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Monday night following multiple explosions which rocked the city.

One of the explosions occurred at the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), spreading fear across the city.

The first explosion reportedly occurred about 7pm during iftar, the evening meal that marks the breaking of the Ramadan fast for the day.

Police Explosives Ordinance Division (EOD) personnel were said to have stormed the place not long after the explosion.

A trending video on the incident indicated a voice speaking Hausa saying in the background that “a bomb has exploded at the security checkpoint.”

Furthermore, the footage showed a seemingly lifeless body lying beside a vehicle in the immediate area of the explosion, highlighting that a life may have been lost.

Other reports said, aside UMTH, other explosions rocked the popular Monday Market.

Spokesman of the State Police Command, Nahum Kenneth Daso, in a post on his X, stated: “Following reports of a suspected explosion at Maiduguri Monday Market and UMTH gate at about 7:20 PM, joint security operatives and emergency responders have been deployed. The Police EOD Unit, Base 13 Maiduguri, is on the ground.

“Residents are advised to remain calm and avoid the area while assessments continue. Further updates will follow shortly.”

Daso released two emergency telephone numbers to which residents and other persons could call for further communication.
