*Effects On Economy Feared
For the second time in less than a week this year, the national electricity grid again collapsed, in the morning today.
The first grid collapse this year occurred only last week.
The current collapse was confirmed by the Nigeria National Grid on X around 10:53 am.
The post simply read: “Grid Collapse.”
A follow-up tweet said, “Restoration is in progress!”
Power generation has fallen to zero megawatts, according to figures from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).
Electricity distribution companies to be affected by today’s collapse include Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Benin, Eko, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja and Yola.
The collapse is coming at a time that the Federal Government has rolled out a new tax regime which many Nigerians have openly complained will affect the dire poverty level in the land.
Adding frequent grid challenges, which directly affect the predominant small businesses and others, experts believe, will make implementation of the full regime difficult,or,in a worse case scenario, may trigger civil unrest.
