“The cause of the crash was due to over-speeding and wrongful overtaking by the drive who overtook from the right hand side thereby ramming into a stationary vehicle.”
These are the words of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) which gave reasons for today’s auto crash involving the holidaying former world heavyweight boxing champion, Nigeria-born Briton Anthony Joshua, along the Ogun State stretch of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
FRSC identified over-speeding and wrongful overtaking as the cause of the crash that killed two persons and left Joshua injured.
The crash involved a Lexus SUV with the number plate, KRD 850 HN, in which Joshua rode, and which collided with a stationary truck about some minutes past 11 am.
Giving further details, FRSC stated that the accident involved five persons, with Joshua injured, two unhurt and two dead.
According to the FRSC, Joshua’s driver was over-speeding and wrongfully overtook from the right hand side, and rammed into the stationary vehicle.
The statement added that the boxer was rushed to an undisclosed hospital by security officers attached to him while bodies of the deceased were deposited at Livewell Hospital morgue, Sagamu.
FRSC, however, did not give details of how the deceased died, whether they were near the stationary vehicle and crushed, or if they were road bystanders.
“An Auto crash occured today 29th December 2025 involving two vehicles along Lagos-Ibadan expressway at SINOMA.
“Sagamu unit of FRSC rescue team were at the scene as soon as they were informed.
“Five people were involved, one was injured, two were unhurt while two were killed in the crash.
“The cause of the crash was due to over-speeding and wrongful overtaking by the drive who overtook from the right hand side thereby ramming into a stationary vehicle,”FRSC stated.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Ogun State Command, Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Oluseyi Babaseyi, on his part, said the Command had kicked off thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
He confirmed that Joshua, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and was receiving medical attention even as the Command expressed heartfelt condolences to families of the deceased.
