Why Churches Shy Away From Sex Education

By OREVA GODWIN

A man of God once told someone, “Oreva can’t be a born-again Christian and write the way she does. She’s influenced by a familiar spirit. That’s where she gets her inspiration, and that’s why she talks so boldly about sex. She doesn’t have the Holy Spirit in her.”

It’s sad that we still have Stone Age Christians who haven’t come to the realization that Christ doesn’t limit us from speaking the truth or discussing deep matters. We’ve replaced spirituality with religion, and called it holiness. Having the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean you lose your sense or individuality. In fact, the Holy Spirit cannot dwell in someone who has no mind of their own.

God uses bold, free-spirited people, those who can question Him, reason with Him, and hold a real conversation with Him. God is not a puppeteer, and you are not His puppet. Stop acting like one.

Funny enough, I’m a worker in the church, not just any worker, but an intercessor, and I hold a position in that department. Surprised? Don’t be. That’s my calling. I’m a burden carrier. But I’m not your regular intercessor. I’ve had encounters with God, and I can boldly say the Holy Spirit is not against my boldness or sharp tongue. I am the daughter of a Lion. Please, let me roar!

In our department, the prayers circle around “holiness, holiness, and more holiness.” Fornication and adultery are the only sins that exist to some people. Meanwhile, no one prays against lack of love, the very thing destroying the body of Christ daily.

One day, I was given the opportunity to lead prayers. My controversial nature came through. I told them, “We don’t understand the Holy Spirit. He doesn’t leave us because we have sinned; He leaves when we start enjoying sin and don’t feel any remorse. If holiness is what qualified us for His presence, none of us would have the Holy Spirit.”

I asked them to pray for the fear of God, to pray for hearts that recognize sin and don’t enjoy it. Then I told them to pray for love, the heart of Christ. And finally, to pray for our youths because like they all know, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. If young people are busy and productive, sin will reduce.

Apparently, my prayer points didn’t sound “holy” enough. That was the last time I led prayers, and I laughed so hard.

This is the problem with the church: one rigid thinking pattern. Christianity is not a cult. God reveals Himself to people in different ways, yet all His revelations lead to one truth. Many Christians don’t even know God; they only know their pastors. What makes us different from idol worshippers who only know their gods through a priest?

And when it comes to sex, the holiest taboo of all, the hypocrisy is alarming. People act shocked when they hear the word sex, yet they crave for and enjoy it in secret.

The funny thing about most Christians is that we act holy from the outside, but deep inside our minds are dirty. When you judge those who discuss sex, remember the Song of Solomon. Funny how most churches skip that book, even in marriage classes. Was Solomon influenced by a familiar spirit when he described a woman’s body in detail? Or was the Bible itself possessed when it approved Solomon’s writing?

I asked someone, “Is sex a Holy Act?” And he said, “Yes, in as much it is done among married couples.” Me, wanting to be controversial then told him, “sex is not a holy act, it is just an approved act by God for married couples,” and then the argument began.

Let’s stop pretending. Sex is not a holy act. It’s a human act, approved by God within marriage. Hebrews 13:4 says the marriage bed is pure and undefiled. But purity doesn’t mean holiness; it means acceptance. Even during fasting or spiritual retreats, married couples are told to abstain, because you can’t awaken the spirit while feeding the flesh.

Sex is natural. In human laws, you can’t arrest adults for having consensual sex, but you can for rape. The same applies spiritually: God does not condemn what He approves; He only condemns what is abusive or done without order.

Most Christians don’t crave to know God; they crave to obey religion. They claim to have the Holy Spirit but are too afraid to question Him. They are not bold to tell Him to reveal deep things to them. They speak in tongues yet avoid speaking with understanding.

Even in marriage teachings, the church has failed. Every “Singles and Married” program sounds the same, filled with rules, submission talks, and warnings. Hardly does anyone teach the reality that sex is the powerhouse of marriage. Prayer can’t fix a sexless home, only sex can.

You can dress sexy at home, but if there’s no connection in action, it means nothing. A husband can be romantic, yet his wife feels numb because sex has become routine and has no passion. These are truths the church avoids.

We need to stop the hypocrisy and face reality. God is not intimidated by truth. Stop calling every honest conversation “unholy.” Different callings exist in the body of Christ. Some are called to intercede, some to teach, and others to address realities like sex that the church avoids.

The church must stop fighting the truth and start teaching it. There is nothing holy about sex, yet there is nothing sinful about it either. It is human, natural, and approved within its place. Stop labeling bold voices as rebellious; they might just be the voices God wants to use to heal homes and break ignorance.

“Truth doesn’t offend God, it only exposes lies. And maybe that’s what the church fears most.”
