Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has emphasized the importance of unity among Muslims and the promotion of religious values.
He said they are essential ingredients for societal growth and economic prosperity.
Governor Idris made the call while welcoming participants to the Muslim Unity Convention held in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.
The event, organized by the State Ministry of Religious Affairs, brought together various Islamic groups to deliberate on ‘Responsible Leadership and Patriotism’.
“I commend all the Islamic groups, Izala, Tijjaniyya, Qadiriyya, and others, for coming together to demonstrate unity,” the Governor stated.
“With such sincere unity, brotherhood, and sustained fervent prayers, we can overcome the challenges confronting our nation,” he added.
Highlighting the issue of unemployment, especially among the youth and university graduates, Gov. Idris noted that his administration had taken practical steps to address the challenge.
“In the last two years, my administration has employed about 5,000 workers, including over 2,000 new teachers, hundreds of nurses, and many casual workers who are now on permanent and pensionable appointments,” he noted.
Furthermore, the governor said his administration also established Skill Acquisition Centres across the state even as he encouraged National Assembly members to replicate similar initiatives in their constituencies.
“These centres train participants in various trades and skills, and upon graduation, the government will provide them with starter packs and capital. The goal is to make youths self-reliant, reduce unemployment, and foster economic prosperity,” the Governor stressed.
To support participants at the convention, Gov. Idris announced a donation of the sum of N30 million, while the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, donated N10 million.
In his keynote address, the Chief Imam of Abuja National Mosque, Professor Ibrahim Ahmad Makari, lamented the challenges facing Muslim communities in Nigeria and across Africa.
He called on the Ulama to be more proactive in addressing societal problems and urged leaders to work hand in hand with religious scholars.
“Too many lives are being lost to banditry and insurgency. Youths are falling into crime, drug abuse, and moral decay due to joblessness. We must never lose hope. Justice must be the foundation of governance,” Professor Makari emphasized.
He commended Gov. Idris for honoring religious clerics and promoting moral values in society.
Earlier, the Kebbi State Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Arc. Sani Aliyu, traced the long-standing demand for the establishment of the Ministry, saying it only materialized under Gov. Idris.
“This convention brings together Islamic groups from within and outside Kebbi, promoting Muslim unity under the leadership of our charismatic Governor,” he said.
The Commissioner praised the Governor’s fairness and inclusive leadership, noting his support for both Muslims and Christians in the state.
“Governor Idris has appointed Christians as Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants, cleared their N18 million debt from the Jerusalem pilgrimage, and recently allocated land for a Christian cemetery,” he added.
Highlight of the event was the investiture of the Governor as ‘Khadimul Islam’ in recognition of his unwavering commitment to religious affairs
