Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, has expressed willingness to serve just one term in office as Nigeria’s president and thereafter hand over to the North in 2031,if the mega coalition seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027 so decides.
He said he would honour such agreement.
Obi spoke during a Space session on X, tagged #PeterObiOnParallelFacts.
Reiterating that he is not desperate for power, Obi restated that all he wants is a Nigeria that works for everyone, the poor, middle class, the rich, the youth, aged, children, and is more interested in upholding character and integrity as our national ethos.
The session attracted over 10,000 live participants and almost 3,000 audience comments.
Obi said, “If the agreement is one term, I will leave on May 28, 2031 — not even May 29.
“I am not desperate to be president.”
Reports said the issue of who becomes the coalition’s presidential candidate is a sensitive one that must be handled with utmost care,if those behind the bid to remove Tinubu are serious.
There are claims that Obi is influential among the youth, who form about 65% of the national voting population.
But two spearheads of the coalition, Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential flagbearer in 2023 poll, and Rotimi Amaechi, former Transport Minister in the APC Federal Government of then President Muhammadu Buhari, are reportedly interested in the nation’s top seat in 2027.
