COVID-19 Returns,Varsity Bans Social Gatherings

A fresh wave of the dreaded COVID-19 is in the news as the University of Ghana announced the immediate suspension of all social gatherings on campus following a recent resurgence.

The directive was issued on Wednesday, June 25 and signed by Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen, as part of precautionary efforts to protect the health of the university community.

Though no accurate figures are available, but estimates suggest that there are over two million Nigerians living in Ghana.

Some are students,traders, artisans, University-trained professionals, prostitutes, pimps and others.

There is constant movement into and out of Ghana by both Nigerians and Ghanaians alike, raising concerns of potentially rapid spread of the COVID into Nigeria.

The University of Ghana itself,reports say, has at least 5000 Nigerian students while about 75,000 Nigerians are studying in different universities in the country, with movement-fuelled COVID infections a potential major scare.

“Due to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases on the University of Ghana campus, it has become necessary to suspend all social gatherings with immediate effect,” a notice stated.

The suspension applies to all student groups, including the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Student Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), and all departmental and school associations.

Planned week celebrations and related activities have also been put on hold until further notice.

The university urged all student leaders and stakeholders to comply fully with the directive, stressing that the measure is intended to prioritise public health and safety.

The memo was also copied to the Pro Vice-Chancellor (ASA), Director of Public Affairs, Director of Safety and Security Services, hall authorities, heads of departments, senior tutors, hostel managers, and patrons of student groups.Best online courses.

The announcement signals a renewed phase of caution as the university responds to the re-emergence of COVID-19 on its campus.
