U.S president Donald Trump said on Tuesday, June 17, that he was aiming for a “real end” to the conflict between arch-rivals Israel and Iran, and not just a ceasefire, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports.
According to him, it was in Iran’s hands to end the fighting by completely giving up her nuclear weapons efforts.
There has yet been no reaction to this from Tehran, which had repeatedly stated that the country’s nuclear program was not for mass destruction as supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had issued a religious edict against such.
However, Israel refuses to trust Iran’s words on the matter, insisting that the Persian Gulf nation’s nuclear program had reached a critical stage where it could easily develop a nuclear warhead –an evolution Israel said makes Iran an existential threat to her (Israel) and global stability as Tehran could supply same to terrorist groups around the world in the name of religion. The U.S believes Israel.
Trump told reporters shortly after arriving back in the U.S from a G7 summit in Canada: “I’m not looking for a ceasefire, we’re looking at better than a ceasefire.”
The president said he was looking for “an end, a real end, not a ceasefire,” adding that he wanted a “complete give-up” by Iran.
Trump also said on his Truth Social platform that he had not reached out to Iran for peace talks in any “way, shape, or form”, adding that the country “should have taken the deal that was on the table.”
He described French president Emmanuel Macron who had hinted of a ceasefire plan by Trump, as a “publicity seeking” person, insisting that he (Trump) never mooted such idea in any form.
